What Is Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage—also called prenatal and postnatal massage—is a therapeutic, nurturing approach designed to support women during and after pregnancy. It is performed by therapists trained in the unique needs of pregnant and postpartum bodies, using safe positioning, pressure, and techniques.
At Gentle Waves Massage & Wellness Centre, we provide soothing, specialized massage for every stage of your journey—from first trimester through postpartum recovery.
Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained and certified prenatal massage therapist, it is safe and highly beneficial. However, there are precautions.
Who Should Receive Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage is ideal for:
Expectant mothers in the 2nd or 3rd trimester (and sometimes later in the 1st)
Mothers recovering physically and emotionally postpartum
Those experiencing back pain, poor sleep, swelling, or pelvic pressure
Parents needing a peaceful, grounding space to reconnect with their body
We adapt every session based on your trimester, symptoms, comfort level, and personal goals.
What to Expect During Your Session
At Gentle Waves Massage & Wellness Centre, your safety and comfort come first.
You’ll be positioned safely on your side or supported with cushions in a semi-reclined position
Techniques are gentle and calming, focused on relieving tension without deep pressure
We avoid sensitive acupressure points and adapt our treatment plan for every stage of pregnancy
Postnatal sessions may include abdominal work (if desired) or focus on neck, shoulders, and lower back tension from nursing or lifting
Benefits of Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy brings miraculous changes—but also physical and emotional challenges. Prenatal massage offers natural, non-invasive relief during all trimesters.
Physical Benefits:
Relieves lower back, hip, and pelvic pain
Reduces swelling in legs, feet, and hands
Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage
Relieves sciatica, leg cramps, and nerve compression
Supports hormone regulation and immune health
Mental & Emotional Benefits:
Promotes better sleep and rest
Reduces anxiety, stress, and mood swings
Encourages deep relaxation and emotional grounding
Helps prepare the body for labor by relaxing key muscles
Benefits of Postnatal Massage
After birth, your body deserves recovery time, too. Postnatal massage can:
Reduce back, neck, and shoulder strain (especially from breastfeeding or baby-wearing)
Support hormone balance and emotional wellness
Decrease fatigue and increase circulation
Promote uterine recovery and help reduce abdominal bloating
Ease symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety
Gentle massage during the postpartum period also creates a space for emotional self-care during one of life’s most beautiful—and overwhelming—transitions.
Contraindications and Cautions
Avoid or postpone pregnancy massage if you have:
High-risk pregnancy or preterm labor
Preeclampsia or eclampsia
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clotting disorders
Placenta previa or abruption
Uncontrolled gestational diabetes or hypertension
Severe swelling or unexplained pain
Fever or infection
We always work closely with you (and your healthcare provider if necessary) to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the session.
